Standardized Financials Chart of Accounts Mapping

Is there mapping documentation regarding how Intrinio puts together the Standardized Financials? For example, interest expense is classified as other income/expense for GOOG-2018-FY but as interest expense for ORCL-2018-FY. This is how each is categorized on their financial statements, but it makes it harder to do cross-comparisons. The same goes for cross-holdings etc. Any guidance would be great. Thank you!

Hi leosmigel, thank you for your question and apologies for the delayed response!

Our system uses a complex series of strategies that work to interpret tags from reported filings in XBRL that we standardize into templates based on industry. Each strategy is unique and builds upon prior filings to determine how to map from the reported XBRL file into the standardized forms (either industrial or financial).

Because each is unique to the company, a mapping documentation is not possible. There would be too many to publish.

If we took each tag as meaning the same for each company and had a 1:1 strategy, many of the values in the pre-tax income, net income, etc could be thrown off which can then have issues with the EPS. Because every company is different, it must be a unique strategy in order to balance the filings properly.

This issue is born out of the massive number of filings we process everyday that use a wide variety of tags and techniques to file with the SEC.

At Intrinio, we are constantly doing research into the most effective mapping strategies to best interpret the wide variety of corporate filing techniques. We also have a small technical support team happy to look into any filing you believe is mapped improperly who can research and potentially fix these issues. We love working with our clients and are happy to help either fix data issues, or explain why the data is presented the way it is.

Please let me know if you have any questions! Thank you again for your post!
